There are multiple names for God that are listed in the Bible, including Elohim, Adonai, and Yahweh. Yahweh is derived from the original tetragrammaton, YHWH, the Hebrew name for God that was revealed to Moses in the book of Exodus. It is unknown how it was originally pronounced. Although YHWH (Yahweh) is the most commonly used name (over 6800 occurrences in the Bible), the Jewish tradition was to speak the word “Adonai” instead, not wanting to risk taking this important name in vain! Unfortunately, many today do not share in this respect of God’s name and use it in vain in a derogatory sense. While we are to have a close and loving relationship with God, let us not forget to treat the name of God with as much respect as the early Jews did with YHWH. #ThanksforAsking!
